Aloha!    My name is Eileen Cain.  I was born and raised in Washington, D.C.,  where I survived the tumultuous 1960’s and mid-1970’s, surrounded by the civil rights movement and the historical sites of the city.  A child of a large family, I frequented the Smithsonian museums, which were originally intended to be a free school and, despite attempts by some to change that, remain free of charge today.

However, the climate in DC was too cold, and I longed for warmth.  One gray winter day, when the heater in my little car quit working, I decided it was time to move on.

In 1977, I made this dream come true by moving to Hawai‘i to study linguistics, and I have been living here ever since.  I fell in love with, not just this place, with its sloping mountains and fragrant flowers, but with the people and their beautiful language, ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i. The language came dangerously close to dying out, but it has been undergoing an inspiring revival.

For the past 18 years, I’ve been teaching writing at a community college here on O’ahu. I enjoy research and writing, and the purpose is to share information with others!

Greetings and best wishes to all!
